If you’ve never heard of Dickens Christmas you’re missing out. Held in Skaneateles, NY every weekend of December (through Christmas), it is a truly magical experience for the whole family. One of our favorite Christmas traditions, stopping in is so worth your time if you’re nearby!

In the very briefest of summary: the downtown area is transformed into a Dickens village, emphasis on A Christmas Carol. You’ll find costumed actors, pop-up street performances, free treats, caroling, and plenty more.

There’s an abundance of information available from the village of Skaneateles to help you plan, including where to park, maps, schedules, and calendars. Since they have it pretty well covered, I’d just like to share our family’s can’t miss highlights:

  • Roasted chestnuts
They’re free, they’re toasty in your hands on a chilly day, and they’ve turned into a family favorite holiday treat. It turns out we’re incapable of replicating these at home, so this is a must-do item.
  • Mother Goose story time
The woman who portrays Mother Goose is an absolute gem that my little guy looks forward to seeing. It’s really just a library-style story time, but it gets you inside for a bit, which is always welcome.
  • Visiting Father Christmas!
    Obviously.
  • A Christmas Carol trunk show
Held at the library, a lovely gentleman tells the classic story with random audience members acting out each part (don’t worry he feeds you each line as you go). Very silly and a lot of fun.
  • Brass Ensemble
A new favorite, but the brass ensemble was a big hit with little guy this year. We ended up staying outside to enjoy several songs before moving along.
  • Carriage rides
Unlike the other listed items, this one does cost extra money but is so magical for small humans if you’re willing and able. Carriage rides depart from the Inn area.

It’s not a particularly long adventure–you could easily see the highlights pretty quickly. We like to linger a bit for lunch, maybe stop at the bakery or a store. Even if you’re just passing through during holiday travel, it’s a festive way to break up the day.

What are some of your favorite holiday stops? Any local traditions you can’t miss?

Happy Christmas trails 🥾💚❤️
